The Mark From Last Summer Did Not Fade. It Was Waiting.

I spent two years treating the stain. Nobody had ever treated the wound underneath, and that is the only reason it kept coming back.

The mark on my cheekbone is four hundred and eleven days old. I know that because I photographed it the morning it appeared, which tells you most of what you need to know about where my head was that week.

It faded twice. Both times I thought I had won. Both times it came back in the same place, a little wider, as though it had been sitting under there the whole time waiting for me to stop.

Have you ever had a spot fade and then return in exactly the same place?

Have you finished a whole bottle of brightening serum and quietly not bought it again?

Are there three of them in your bathroom drawer right now?

My name does not matter much here. My drawer does. I tipped it out onto the bed in March and counted.

  • ×Vitamin C serum, two bottles, one of them oxidised
  • ×Niacinamide, finished, no change I could photograph
  • ×A brightening essence a friend swore by
  • ×Two tubes of azelaic acid
  • ×An SPF I was religious about, the only one I do not regret

The part I had not said out loud

I am forty one. The spots started at thirty eight. One week in Portugal where I was sensible for four days and not sensible on the fifth. That is the entire origin story, and it is embarrassing how small it is.

What I told people was that I had pigmentation. What was actually happening is that my skin had been injured, had never finished healing, and was making pigment as a defence. Not stubborn. Defending.

Not stubborn. Defending. Those are two completely different problems, and for two years I had been buying products for the wrong one.

What it cost me to work that out

Two years of trying, in the order I tried it

  • Brightening serums and essences$340
  • Three chemical peels at a med spa$525
  • Prescription lightening cream, twice$180
  • A course of four IPL sessions$1,095
  • Topping the IPL up nine months later$420

The two creams I use now$39.99

Two thousand five hundred and sixty dollars. The IPL worked, by the way. That is the part that still annoys me. It worked, and then it came back, because the laser had taken away the pigment and nobody had done a single thing about the reason my skin was making it.

The four step loop nobody draws for you

01. Attack

adv19 clinical serum bottle

You bleach, peel or laser the pigment that is already sitting there. It goes. This is the part that feels like progress, and it is the part they photograph.

02. Fade

adv20 faded mark cheekbone

For four to eight weeks the skin looks even and you tell yourself you have finally cracked it. You stop taking the weekly photo.

03. Defend

The barrier underneath is still damaged. Damaged skin makes melanin to protect itself. It is not misbehaving. It is doing its job.

04. Return

adv21 woman at mirror spot

The mark comes back in the same spot, because nothing ever changed the condition that caused it. Then you book the next session, and the loop starts again with your money in it.

Repair first. Then renew. In that order. I have written that on the back of my hand more than once.

What I went and read instead of booking again

I stopped searching for brightening and started searching for repair, and it took me somewhere I did not expect. Centella asiatica has been used on wounds in Korea for a very long time. One pharmaceutical company, Dongkook, has been extracting it since 1968 and holds four patents on how they do it. Their consumer line, Centellian24, has sold over one hundred million tubes in a country of fifty two million people. That ratio is what made me keep reading.

They make two creams that are meant to be used together and almost nobody outside Korea uses them in the right order. The first carries PDRN, a polynucleotide studied for its role in tissue recovery, and it is the repair step. The second carries 30,000ppm of TECA, the concentrated Centella fraction, and it is the firming step. One works on the wound. One works on the surface. The order is the whole point.

Anyone who promises you a mark from two summers ago will be gone in a week is selling you another lap of the loop. It took me until about week five to see anything I would swear to in daylight, and what changed first was not the spot.

What changed first was the redness around my nose that I had stopped noticing years ago. Then the texture on my cheek, which I noticed putting on foundation. The mark was last, and it has not vanished, it has thinned. In August my sister asked whether I had had something done, which is the most flattering insult available to a woman of forty one.

  • Cleanse, and leave the skin slightly damp
  • PDRN repair cream first, a pea sized amount, whole face
  • Time Reverse firming cream over the top
  • Nothing else at night. Sunscreen is the morning job

What to honestly expect

  1. Week 1 to 2Skin feels calmer and less tight. Nothing visible in a photograph yet.
  2. Week 3 to 5Redness settles and texture smooths. This is where most people stop, and where they should not.
  3. Week 6 to 12Older marks start to thin. Newer ones move faster than older ones, always.

Will this do anything for a mark that is years old?

Slower than a new one, and I want to be straight about that. Newer marks moved first for me. The older one on my cheekbone took closer to ten weeks before I would have described it as thinner, and it is still faintly there. If you need it gone by a date, this is not the thing that does that.

Can I keep using retinol or acids?

Yes, and several of the reviews are from women doing exactly that. The repair cream is often the thing people reach for on the nights their skin is sore from actives. I alternate rather than layer, and I do not use an acid the same night as the retinol.

Is it going to break me out?

The firming cream is rich, so I use it at night only. Patch it behind the ear for two nights if you are reactive. Both passed skin irritation testing and neither has fragrance oils high in the list, but skin is skin and mine is not yours.

What if it does nothing for me?

Thirty days, money back, and you are not asked to post the creams back. That is the only reason I tried it after the IPL, and it is the reason I would say try it rather than take my word for any of this.

The Madeca Best Duo

Both creams, the repair one and the firming one, bought together. $39.99 for the pair instead of $66.50, or Buy 2 Get 1 Free at $74.99, which is roughly six months of both.

For context, that is less than one IPL session, and I have paid for five.

If any of that sounded like your drawer, you are not lazy and you did not do it wrong. You were treating the stain. That is what almost everyone sells, because the stain is the bit you can photograph. Repair first, then renew, in that order.
