5 Reasons Your Expensive Moisturizer Quits On You At Week Four

(#2 is about where the cream physically sits on your face)

The first month is always good.

You buy the expensive jar, you use it properly, and inside a fortnight your skin looks plumper and feels better. You tell someone about it.

Then week five arrives and nothing more happens. Not worse. Just static, month after month, while you keep buying the jar because stopping feels like going backwards.

That plateau is not bad luck and it is not you using it wrong. It is the predictable end of what a moisturizer is able to do, and here are five reasons it happens on the ninety dollar jar exactly as reliably as on the twelve dollar one.

The jar was never going to do this part.

  • ×Weeks one to four were hydration, and hydration is a level, not a trajectory.
  • × A moisturizer works on a layer about as thick as kitchen foil.
  • × The slackness starts underneath it, where renewal slows.
  • × Price buys texture, feel and packaging, not depth.
  • × And nothing in the routine is aimed one level down.

Weeks one to four were hydration. That is all they ever were.

(a real change, and a finite one)

Dehydrated skin looks creased, dull and slack. Rehydrate it and all three improve quickly, which is the improvement you saw.

But hydration is a level, not a trajectory. Once the skin is holding as much water as it can hold, there is nothing left in that mechanism to give you, and the curve flattens.

Everything after week four has to come from somewhere else. Most jars have nowhere else to go.

See what goes underneath it

#2

The layer that slackened is under the one you are moisturizing

(about the thickness of kitchen foil)

A moisturizer is formulated to work on the outermost layer of skin, which is roughly the thickness of a sheet of kitchen foil.

The slackness in the mirror does not start there. It starts underneath, in the layer where skin renews itself, and it starts because that renewal slows with age.

No cream sitting on the surface reaches that layer. This is a matter of where the product physically is, not how good it is, which is why the plateau arrives on schedule regardless of price.

What the pair costs against one jar

What a year on the shelf costs

  • Luxury moisturizer, 50ml, four a year$380 to $1,280
  • Eye cream, two a year$120 to $240
  • Serum or ampoule, three a year$210 to $450
  • The jar you bought and stopped using$95 to $320

A typical year of the shelf$805 to $2,290

The two creams, six months$74.99

Price buys texture and packaging, not depth

#3

Price buys texture and packaging, not depth

(what ninety dollars actually bought)

An expensive moisturizer is usually genuinely nicer. Better emulsion, better feel, better fragrance, more elegant slip, sometimes a more stable form of an antioxidant.

None of those things change which layer it works on. You are paying for a better version of the same job.

The useful question is not whether the jar is good. It is whether anything in your routine is aimed one level down, and for most women the honest answer is no.

What Korea puts on before the moisturizer

#4

What Korea puts on before the moisturizer

(the order is the whole thing)

In Seoul the sequence is fixed. Repair the layer underneath first, then work on the surface.

The repair step is PDRN. It appears on an ingredient list as sodium DNA, and it came out of wound care rather than cosmetics, which is why Korean clinics apply it the moment a laser treatment finishes.

The second step is TECA, the concentrated form of centella asiatica, at 30,000ppm. Firmness, lines, tone. It only works properly once the first layer has been dealt with.

Both creams are made by Centellian24, owned by Dongkook Pharmaceutical, who have been working on centella extraction since 1968 and hold four patents on the extraction alone. The cream has sold over 100 million tubes in Korea, a country of 52 million people.

  • Step one, PDRN. The layer a moisturizer never reaches
  • Step two, 30,000ppm TECA on the surface
  • Sixty seconds, and nothing to rinse
See the two step routine

Sixty seconds, every night

  1. Step 1Cleanse and leave the skin slightly damp
  2. Step 2PDRN repair cream first, a pea sized amount, face and neck
  3. Step 3Time Reverse over the top, same amount
  4. MorningSunscreen. Nothing else changes

    What is actually in them

  • PDRN at 20,000ppm, the repair step Korean clinics inject
  • 30,000ppm TECA, the concentrated Centella fraction
  • Madecassoside, the wound healing compound in both creams
  • Niacinamide for tone and pores
  • Four patents on the extraction, held since 1968

What to honestly expect

  1. Week 1 to 2Skin feels calmer and less tight. Nothing you could photograph yet
  2. Week 3 to 5Redness settles and texture smooths. Most people stop here and should not
  3. Week 6 to 8Firmness is the slow one. This is where the jawline shows up
  4. Week 8+It compounds. This is the point of doing it nightly rather than sometimes

Who this is actually for

    This is for you if

  • Your skin improved for a month and then stopped
  • You own good products and none of them are aimed underneath
  • You are about to buy a more expensive version of the same jar
  • You will do two steps at night and nothing more
  • You would rather spend $74.99 than $320 on the next one

The part nobody puts on the page

The two creams together are $39.99. Retail for the pair is $66.50, and the gap is there because we import direct rather than through a US distributor.

Two 50ml tubes used once a night is roughly two months. That works out at under seventy cents a day, which for most women reading this is less than the jar that plateaued.

Most people take the Buy 2 Get 1 Free, which is six months of both creams for $74.99. That is forty two cents a day, and it is the one that stops you running out halfway through the stretch where the change actually shows.

Do I stop using my moisturizer?

You do not have to, though most people find they no longer need it. These are creams rather than serums, so the second step is already doing the sealing job. If your skin is dry in winter, keep the jar and put it on last.

Can I just buy one of the two?

You can, and plenty of people start there. But the firming cream on its own plateaus for exactly the reason this page is about, and the repair cream on its own does not touch the lines on the surface. One gets you half.

How fast will I see anything?

Calmer skin in the first week or two. Texture around week three to five. Firmness is the slow one and it lands closer to week six to eight. Anyone promising a jawline in seven days is selling you another lap.

Do I have to do it every night?

Nightly is what the reviews are based on. Five nights a week still moves. Twice a week does not, and I would rather tell you that now than take your money.

Is PDRN safe, and what actually is it?

Polydeoxyribonucleotide, derived from salmon DNA. Korean dermatology clinics have used it for years and it is what they inject in the repair step. This is the topical version at 20,000ppm from Dongkook, a pharmaceutical company established in 1968. It is a cosmetic, not a drug, and it is not intended to treat any condition.

Can I keep using my retinol and my acids?

Yes. Serums and treatments first, these two last, they replace your moisturiser. I alternate rather than layer and I do not use an acid the same night as retinol.

What if it does nothing for me?

Thirty days, money back, and you are not asked to post the creams back. That is the only reason I tried it instead of keeping the appointment.

#5

Thirty days, and you keep the creams

(no form, no return label)

This is the part most pages bury and it should not be buried.

Use it for thirty days. If nothing has changed, email and you get your money back. You keep the creams. There is no form, no return label, and nobody asking you to explain yourself.

That is possible because the repeat purchase rate is what it is. 4.8 out of 5 across 748 reviews, and the critical ones are still on the page because deleting them would tell you less than leaving them up.

The jar is not the problem and buying a better jar is not the answer.
